Description

TLDR:
Run a Purple writing contest where we ask authors to write about the most exciting things happening on Farcaster in 2024 and their ideas for Farcaster in 2025.

The goal is to invite Farcaster users to share their visions, discuss them, as well as reach new audiences outside our FC bubble.

Through this proposal we will:

šŸŽÆ Organize a writing contest focused on Farcaster’s future
🧠 Educate participants and readers about key Farcaster-related ideas
🌐 Expand reach to Kiwi's 1,500 crypto-native users and 1000s of authors' subscribers
šŸ† Reward top essays with a prize pool of 2 ETH

Contest Details:

šŸ’”Big Idea

If we want Farcaster to grow, we need more users (qDAU). They need to learn about Farcaster and get excited enough to decide to invest their time on the platform. For some of them, that would mean creating an account, and for some, it would mean coming back to the account they created during the Farcaster bull run in March-May 2024.

That’s why we want people to share new interesting things that happened on Farcaster and describe the big vision for 2025 that could be shared outside the Farcaster bubble.

šŸ› ļøImplementation

To share the Farcaster ideas outside our bubble, we propose using Kiwi.

Kiwi is an app for people who like to read Ethereum’s news, essays and learn about new products. We have 1,500+ monthly readers, and although many have fids, most are not regular FC users, so we could re-activate them through this contest.

We also have a writers' network that we could incentivize to write about Farcaster. Since each author who submits a post has their own subscribers, this means that their posts about Farcaster would be read both by their subscribers as well as Kiwi users.

This means that this kind of content campaign can reach thousands or - in the bull case - even tens of thousands of crypto-native people.

šŸ“ Essay Prompts

We'll select 1-3 subjects and create engaging prompts for authors, similar to our previous successful contests (example: https://paragraph.xyz/@kiwi-updates/into-the-nouniverse-writing-contest-results). Just like we asked Nounders to share a prompt, we will also ask the Farcaster team to share their prompt ideas.

šŸ”— Submission Platform
Authors will submit their essay links to Kiwi. This platform allows for community engagement through submissions, upvotes, and comments.

Kiwi is platform-agnostic, so the essays can be written on Farcaster, Twitter, Paragraph, and any other medium. Users need to have a Kiwi Pass to submit links to Kiwi, and all writers who want to participate in the contest will be able to get a free Pass.

šŸ…Winner Selection
Winners will be determined by the number of upvotes received. We will also use anti contest gaming mechanisms, we figured out so far. The way it works is that we would count upvotes only from Purple NFT owners and Kiwi users who reached a certain karma threshold.

šŸ“¢ Promotion
We'll promote the contest through various channels:

  • Kiwi's network of writers
  • Kiwi and Purple's social media accounts
  • Newsletters
  • Media partners (organized by Kiwi)
  • Other relevant crypto communities
  • And of course Farcaster

šŸ¤ About Kiwi
Kiwi is a decentralized, Ethereum-focused alternative to Hacker News designed for web3 builders, founders, developers, creators, and investors. With approximately 1,500 monthly readers, it’s a place to find top crypto news, essays, dashboards, and products.

Kiwi is also a 2x Purple Grant recipient (in 2023).

šŸ’° Budget Breakdown: 3 ETH Total

  • 2 ETH: Prize pool for winning authors
  • 1 ETH: Contest organization and management

šŸ† Previous Success
We've already organized similar contests with Gnosis, Lens, and Nouns resulting in:

  • Dozens of high-quality submissions
  • Participation from notable authors such as Simon de la Rouviere (Co-inventor of ERC20), Marek (Co-founder of Celo), WMP (editor of Metaversal newsletter), and many more.
  • Contests were mentioned by Bankless, SEED Club, Developer DAO, LearnWeb3, EpicWeb3, and many more.

ā“ FAQ:

Q: How will you ensure fair voting?
A: We will implement voting mechanics based on users’ Kiwi karma score (for Kiwi users) and Purple NFT (for non-Kiwi users). We might also consider using Neynar Score.

Q: Can anyone participate in the contest?
A: Yes, the contest is open to all writers interested in Farcaster-related concepts. Typically they just need to mint a Kiwi Pass, which costs a few $, but to make the contest more accessible we could provide free Passes for Purple owners, and good Farcaster writers.

Q: How long will the contest run?
A: So far, we learned that 3 weeks long deadline works well because authors can prepare very thoughtful essays. The exact duration will be determined and announced before the contest launch.

Q: How much work is there for Purple, and how much work is there for Kiwi?
A: As Kiwi, we typically do 99% of the work necessary to make such a contest successful. We would just need a point of contact on the Purple side to get feedback on our ideas and propositions.

Kiwi’s work means DMing crypto writers we are friends with (about 30-60 people) with information about the contest, nailing and running media partnerships (talking with media, preparing co-promotion posts and so on), writing posts listing the best submissions so far, ensuring that the contest isn't being gamed, and a few others.

The goal is to channel as much attention to the contest as possible.

Q: How many submissions can we count on?
A: It’s hard to guarantee anything, but in the last Nouns contest, we had 23 submissions. Since Farcaster has more users, we might aim for a similar number or even a bit more.

But the number of submissions might not be the best metric to follow. In other words, 1 great post that shapes a new narrative for Farcaster might be worth more than 10 cookie-cuter submissions. So, we try to optimize for quality.

Reach is also important. If we get 50 submissions but all of them just reach people who are already FC-pilled, then it's less useful than if we have 10 submissions that reach people who haven't seen the Farcaster potential yet.

Q: How much impact can we count on?
A: There are two ways to think about the impact.

  1. Shaping the narrative.

Thanks to the Writers’ Contests, we can shape the narrative around Farcaster and get beyond our bubble with essays that might make people re-think what Farcaster AD 2025 really is.

Since the contest would be an event promoted by Kiwi, Purple, and the authors, we would also redirect some of the crypto community's attention to Farcaster.

  1. Reach.

Kiwi has around 1,500 monthly readers, but we also reach our authors’ subscribers and followers. So we count the reach in 1000s of crypto natives. Also, there are other organic mentions that might happen - e.g., last time, our contest was mentioned in the Bankless newsletter, reaching 100k+ people.

šŸ¤” Why This Matters:

  1. Create a set of fresh narratives about Farcaster
  2. Bring awareness of Farcaster to new audiences
  3. Build a repository of valuable, shareable content about Farcaster

If you have any questions or need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. We're excited about the potential of this contest to spread ideas and engage new communities!
