<h1>tldr:</h1><h2><em>A DAO that funds/supports OSS related to wagmi and other crypto OSS</em></h2><h1>Proposal:</h1><p>The world runs on Open-Source Software (OSS). It is a foundational component of crypto and the Internet by allowing individuals and teams to collaborate, learn, and innovate through public sharing of code with no or few restrictions on use. Often, OSS is under-funded and -resourced causing important projects to slow or stop development and not grow contributor bases beyond individual maintainers.</p><p><a href="https://wagmi.sh/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">wagmi</a>&nbsp;is a popular open-source library used by&nbsp;<a href="https://nouns.build/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Nouns Builder</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://ens.domains/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">ENS</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://sushi.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Sushi</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://looksrare.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">LooksRare</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://walletconnect.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">WalletConnect</a>, and many more projects to connect and interact with Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. The wagmi DAO’s objective is to fund and support OSS related to wagmi and other crypto projects in the ecosystem. The wagmi DAO will help support projects and contributors through funding rounds that result in work being done to improve OSS at the intersection of crypto.</p><p>Example proposals could include funding individuals or teams to onboard new maintainers/collaborators to OSS, improve test coverage or documentation, help triage and reproduce bugs, develop new features or libraries, or pay for infrastructure needed to sustain projects.</p><p>While there have been numerous efforts to fund and support OSS over the years, we are extremely excited about applying the NounsDAO model of rolling auctions and funding rounds via Prop House to OSS. We believe this model can help reduce bureaucracy and increase the speed at which projects and individuals can contribute to making OSS better.</p><h1><br></h1><h1>Roadmap: when do you expect to complete it by?</h1><p>wagmi’s mission is to build world-class open-source libraries for building apps on Ethereum with a strong focus on developer experience, feature-richness, lightweight interfaces,&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wagmi-dev/abitype" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">type safety</a>, and stability. The core team is focused on maintaining and extending the “wagmi stack” (from CLIs, to other frameworks such as Vue, Svelte, and Solid), and we want to also encourage contribution from the community to help us achieve our vision of building quality open-source software.</p><h1><br></h1><h1>wagmi</h1><p>Maintaining wagmi is an ongoing effort, and we are committed to ensuring that it meets the needs of supporting projects, the growing ecosystem, and the Ethereum community.</p><p>GitHub&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wagmi-dev/wagmi/issues" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Issues</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wagmi-dev/wagmi/discussions" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Discussions</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wagmi-dev/wagmi/pulls" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">pull requests</a>&nbsp;are the primary surfaces for how we communicate with wagmi users and perform maintenance, and the core team (<a href="https://twitter.com/awkweb%20https://twitter.com/awkweb" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Tom</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/jakemoxey%20https://twitter.com/jakemoxey" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Jake</a>) leads the effort to triage and develop new features. The core team aims to keep the GitHub Issue count to single digits, because wagmi is the bridge to Ethereum for our dependents and consumers, and we want to ensure they remain credible, robust, and stable.</p><p>Furthermore, wagmi wants to encourage and fund external contribution from individuals outside of the core team that want to get involved in OSS. This contribution can be in the form of additional features, triaging issues, writing documentation, and getting involved in discussions. For wagmi to become a healthy OSS project, it needs more than just the core team to be involved in it’s development. For many external contributors, it’s not sustainable to contribute without getting compensated for their hard work.</p><h1><br></h1><h1>Community Involvement &amp; Grants</h1><p>With the above in mind, wagmi wants to encourage developers in the ecosystem to get involved with OSS. Specifically, wagmi wants to provide funding through the DAO to the following areas:</p><ul><li>Projects that are built on top of wagmi — There are&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wagmi-dev/wagmi/network/dependents" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">thousands of developers</a>&nbsp;using wagmi every day at work and for side projects. When developer tools are build on top of wagmi, the whole community can use and make them better.</li><li>Individuals willing to make meaningful contributions to the wagmi library — The wagmi core teams wants external contributors to get involved with maintaining and developing wagmi, whether it be through new features, triaging issues, or involvement on GitHub Discussions. When the active contributor base grows, development becomes faster and further decentralized.</li><li>Projects that are of general interest to wagmi and the frontend EVM ecosystem — There are a number of OSS projects that are of general interest to the various communities wagmi is a part of and require support to reach sustainability. The wagmi DAO would like to encourage maintainers or contributors to these projects to reach out to receive funding for their work on them.</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>The wagmi DAO will be formed in early January through Nouns Builder and start running immediate funding rounds through Prop House.</strong>&nbsp;The core team is fully funded to work on wagmi and related projects full-time through&nbsp;<a href="https://wagmi.sh/blog/paradigm-wagmi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Paradigm</a>&nbsp;and our other sponsors on&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/sponsors/wagmi-dev" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">GitHub</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://gitcoin.co/grants/4493/wagmi-react-hooks-library-for-ethereum" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 122, 183); background-color: transparent;">Gitcoin</a>, and direct contributions. The DAO will fund work for external contributors and projects, not the core team. We work mostly asynchronously (between Brooklyn and Melbourne) and almost all of our work in public on GitHib. In addition to working on wagmi, we both have experience leading engineering work on Ethereum related consumer products, used by hundreds of thousands of users per month.
